Why are we providing India with $21 million? “They’re much richer,” U.S. President Donald Trump claims.
President Donald Trump stated that India does not require such financial support given its expanding economy and high tax rates after the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) decided to withdraw the $21 million fund designated for “Voter Turnout in India.”
Mr. Trump attacked the notion of supporting voter turnout campaigns in India, even as he expressed his admiration for the nation and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mr. Trump signed executive orders at Mar-a-Lago on February 18, 2025, Tuesday, and said, “Why are we paying $21 million to India for such great wealth? Since their tarriffs are such high that we can hardly enter, they are among the nations that tax us the most in the world. But my admiration for India and for its Prime Minister; $21 million for voter turnout?”
DOGE released a statement regarding the list of U.S. taxpayer-funded projects that were scrapped on February 16. It also stated the $21 million that had been earmarked for voter turnout in India.
After the announcement, Amit Malviya of the BJP responded on his X. “21 million dollars for voting? There is no doubt that this is outside meddling in India’s election process. And who benefits from this? His post stated, “Definitely not the ruling party.”
