Flyadeal, a fast-growing Saudi low-cost airline, has set its sights on India as part of its bold expansion plan. The airline aims to more than double its fleet over the next four years, transitioning from a predominantly domestic carrier to one with significant international reach.
At the Skift Global Forum East in Dubai, CEO Steven Greenway confirmed that India is expected to play a major role in Flyadeal’s cross-border expansion. He emphasized that the Saudi market is still evolving, but Flyadeal’s growth is expected to continue at 10-15% annually, with a shift from 80% domestic capacity to a more balanced network, with international flights driving the majority of the growth.
Greenway pointed out that while China was not a priority, India would be a key focus due to its large market size and the prevalence of worker and religious traffic. He noted that the Indian subcontinent would be a key target for expansion in the next year.
Flyadeal’s growth could mirror that of its competitor, Flynas, which already serves major Indian cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. As part of its expansion, Flyadeal is considering an order for widebody aircraft to cater to the high-volume, low-yield market, including pilgrims and workers traveling to Saudi Arabia. Currently operating an all-Airbus A320 fleet, Flyadeal will begin receiving larger A321 aircraft in 2026, but the introduction of widebody jets, such as the Airbus A330 or Boeing 787, could allow the airline to increase passenger capacity and enhance cargo capabilities.
The airline is already leasing a small number of widebody planes for seasonal peaks in religious traffic. Greenway suggested that the introduction of year-round widebody jets would create new opportunities for expansion, with possible routes ranging from pilgrim flights to work traffic from Southeast Asia.
Flyadeal, launched in 2017, has quickly become one of Saudi Arabia’s largest low-cost carriers. Greenway, with experience at budget airlines like Scoot and Swoop, is spearheading Flyadeal’s ambitious plans for growth.
