The visiting Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs, David Lammy, is the highest-ranking official from the United Kingdom to visit India since the Labour Party won a landslide victory in the most recent election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that India is committed to finalizing a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom. A “landmark” initiative in technology security, the U.K.-India TechSec Initiative, was introduced by the two countries.
I appreciate the priority given by PM Keir Starmer to expand and enhance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Remain dedicated to strengthening these ties. Welcome to the bilateral Technology Security Initiative and the intention to finalize a mutually beneficial FTA,” stated Mr. Modi.
The UK-India Technology Security Initiative expands on previous telecom agreements between the United Kingdom and India, aiming to address emerging security challenges and capitalize on new investment opportunities. According to a statement from U.K. authorities, the agreement was “spearheaded” by the National Security Advisors of both countries.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar invited Mr. Lammy to participate in a round of discussions during which they discussed a variety of topics. Indicating that India is looking to work with the UK to address globally relevant issues like climate action, Mr. Jaishankar said that the two countries should collaborate on “global matters on global platforms.”
We are both countries that have a big global presence in different ways. Thus, in my opinion, the United Kingdom and India must collaborate on global concerns and global forums,” Mr. Jaishankar stated.
Mr. Lammy mentioned the “unique living bridge” that links India and the UK during his discussion with Mr. Modi, adding that the two countries are advancing “climate action while creating opportunities for British and Indian businesses.” For several years, India and the United Kingdom have been engaged in extensive negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
