Marylebone Cricket Club has named Robert Lawson, a leading figure in the energy sector, as its new CEO and secretary. Lawson is set to begin his role at Lord’s in mid-February 2025.
Since 2022, Lawson has been the Executive Vice President of Mercuria Energy Group. He takes over from Guy Lavender, who announced his resignation in August after seven years in the position.
As Global Head of Mergers and Acquisitions and Program Director at BP, Lawson handled over $100 billion in transactions during his tenure. A press release from the MCC stated that he “led significant organizational and cultural change with a clear strategic vision.”
In addition to his cricket experience, he has charity work with the Alsama Project in Lebanon, a refugee initiative that has a close relationship with the MCC Foundation.
With the Lord’s-based London Spirit expected to be the most profitable of the eight teams in the upcoming Hundred equity auction, in which MCC will receive a 51% stake, he joins MCC at a critical time for the team.
In the announcement, MCC highlighted that his vast knowledge of the game, combined with his expertise in partnerships and investments, positions him well to provide valuable guidance on The Hundred. Additionally, he possesses a strong understanding of MCC’s values, objectives, and future plans, particularly in relation to facilities, member involvement, and business prospects.
MCC chair Mark Nicholas stated, “Rob Lawson stood out as a truly exceptional candidate from a very strong field.” “His outstanding business record, passion for cricket, and intimate knowledge of private members’ clubs like RAC bode well for MCC’s vibrant and exciting future. The cricketing and event skills in MCC’s leadership team will be ideally complemented by Rob’s global perspective and ability to communicate with a variety of stakeholders. I’m excited to have Rob take the helm at this moment of great promise and potential for the Club.”
Lawson stated: “It is a great honor for me to serve as the Chief Executive and Secretary of MCC, a team that exemplifies cricket’s culture and heritage. As we navigate the opportunities and challenges of contemporary cricket and the Club’s ongoing goal to be working for the betterment of the game, I look forward to working with Mark, the Members, the Committee, and the entire MCC team to build on its illustrious heritage.”
